Teachers not just in India but elsewhere too are worried about the learning outcome because teaching online is not the same as it is in the classroom. The set of approaches in both online and traditional classroom is different in many areas. In online classes, more emphasis is on making learning effective for a better outcome.
Teaching online requires constant interaction with the students to keep them engaged in the class. Teachers’ effort to learn new skills to make teaching apt for online classes is unquestionable. But they have to keep trying out the methods they are learning, and self-evaluate to see if it is benefitting them. Now because the teachers do not have direct interaction with the students, establishing a similar kind of interaction in the remote learning setup can be immensely beneficial.
Earlier, we had pointed out the importance of creating the right environment and ways to foster the interest of the students in online classes. Reiterating the same point, here we will discuss a set of fresh five online teaching strategies that will help teachers boost learning. Read on to unravel them one by one.
Bringing Digital Equity: In an online classroom, there is a chance that not all students will be tech proficient. The online classroom setup is new for all; be it a teacher or a student. As their mentor, first, spot out the technological capabilities of your students in the class. Remove any confusion in using classroom technology. Explain to them the importance of using classroom technology for privacy and the importance of access to VPN. Know what kind of work students will be able to perform online using classroom tools. There will be one or two students in the entire class who will be tech-savvy. Delegate them some responsibility to take charge and help their peers know the technology better.
Using Online Whiteboard: All this while, students were accustomed to seeing teachers write down the key points of the lesson on the whiteboard in a physical classroom setup. Keeping the same practice intact, teachers can make use of online whiteboard over traditional whiteboards in online classes. Unlike the traditional whiteboard where a teacher could only write texts which were restricted to paper documents, in the online whiteboard they can do more. Say, along with texts, they can showcase images, shapes, and others.
Flip Classroom: Rather than creating assignments on lessons and distributing them after the class; tweak the practice slightly. Try out flip classroom strategy and allow self-learning to take the center stage. While the smartest student in the class will excel in this practice, it is better to rotate and ask the weaker student to prepare for a lesson and explain it to the class. This will help the teacher to provide vital feedback to the student and uplift the confidence level of a particular student. The flip learning environment helps make the classroom more dynamic-vital for online classes. It also fosters a collaborative learning environment. If the class time is a constraint, create a group discussion in addition to the same topic, let the students learn from each other and at last, take the charge to provide feedback.
Adaptive Learning: Much of the work of a teacher gets simpler when they have understood what the students prefer. By this, it is meant, whether students enjoy interactive elements in teaching (video, text, and image) or the practice of flip classroom and group discussion. It can be checked from test and assignment scores as well as the queries they post in between the instruction. Say in a particular class, students were interactive throughout the session, it indicates keenness of the students to know more on the topic. On the other side, it may also reflect the chapter is hard for them to understand. The behavioral traits of the students can help the teacher tweak the teaching practice accordingly.
Content Creation by Students: Allow students to use their innate power of exploration. The idea is to keep them engaged and a sudden switch to an online class set up from that of a physical classroom is enough distraction for the students. Bring back their attention to learning through content creation activity. Let them create content or express their understanding through podcasts, graphics, video, and likewise. Allow them to showcase their work in the class and along with feedback, appreciate their efforts. This will encourage them to create more content and look forward to the online classes eagerly. The more they apply creativity in work, the better they get in this important 21st-century skill.
