Gifford-McMahon Cycle

The Gifford-McMahon cycle is a thermodynamic refrigeration cycle used in the operation of cryogenic refrigerators, specifically for achieving temperatures below about 10 Kelvin (K). It is named after its inventors Peter Gifford and William McMahon.

The cycle relies on the expansion and compression of a gas, typically helium, to absorb and release heat, allowing the refrigerator to achieve very low temperatures. The basic cycle consists of four main stages: compression, heat rejection, expansion, and heat absorption. These stages are implemented using a compressor, a heat exchanger, an expansion valve, and another heat exchanger, respectively.

Gifford-McMahon cycle refrigerators are commonly used in scientific research, medical applications (such as in magnetic resonance imaging), and some industrial processes where extremely low temperatures are required. They have the advantage of being reliable and capable of reaching temperatures close to absolute zero.
