The CEC is the Chief Election Commissioner. All these duties are supervised by the Chief Election Commissioner. Therefore, the Chief Election Commissioner plays a crucial role in elections. The Chief Election Commissioner oversees all national elections, including elections for president, vice president, Admission Management, state legislatures, and members of Congress.

The head of the State Election Commission is usually a civil servant, preferably an IAS. To hold the post of Chief Election Commissioner, which is not open to all, one must be a civil servant. Appointments are Election Commissioners for 6 years or up to the age of 65, whichever comes first.
