India celebrates World Student Day on October 15th every year. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam served as India’s 11th President from 2002 until 2007. He was elected with the support of the then Bharatiya Janata Party-led government led by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.
He is an aerospace scientist and teacher who played a key role in the successful Pokhran II nuclear test in 1998, earning him the title of Indian Missile Man. India’s missile defence program has achieved several milestones under him. Born and raised in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, in 1931, Dr Kalam completed Aerospace Engineering. He spent 40 years at Isro, DRDO, overseeing important projects and serving as a scientific administrator.
He has won numerous awards throughout his life. Furthermore, he won the Padma Bhushan Award in 1981 and the Padma Vibhushan Award in 1990. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna for his research contributions. He is also an author and has written many books such as Wings of Fire, My Journey and Ignited Minds.
But he wanted the world to remember him as a teacher. Dr Kalam was the president we all know. Students, children and teachers looked up to him, and he loved interacting with him and hearing new ideas. And inspired generations of children to do what they love. His thoughts and quotes are still widely shared.
