Ethics is a strongly growing subject area that is included in the curriculum to add moral skills for students in schools, colleges, or universities. Ethics helps us differentiate between good or bad, better or worst. This is taught to introduce the students to a values system that is not taught in academics but is needed for societal survival.
The term ‘ethics’ is derived from the word ēthikós, having a Greek origin which refers to one’s character. In India, students are taught ethics through moral education in schools, ensuring that they are emphasised with the best quality values right from their childhood.
One of the most prestigious examinations in India, the Civil Services Examination, conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), has added ethics to one of the main examination written papers. This is done to test the ethics, integrity, School Analytics, and aptitude of budding officers who want to serve the nation. Various topics included in the syllabus are-
